Combining human writing with digitally created visuals is a first for children's picture book publishing, according to Stone Hollow Press. The artwork for the picture book "If Animals Had Jobs" was produced with the aid of DALLE 2, an artificial intelligence (AI) system created by OpenAI, an AI research and implementation firm. DALLE 2 created all of the book's illustrations, including the cover. All of the photos were produced using the author's brief text descriptions.

"We'll find new and exciting ways to incorporate this technology into our personal and professional lives as artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, more pervasive, and more accessible to everyone," predicts Dennis DeRobertis, author of "If Animals had Jobs" and publisher of Stone Hollow Press.

"It was amazing—and depressing—to watch this technology in action and how seamlessly it merged with the artistic process even after a career in technology. We're reaching the limit of what this technology can achieve, but I will still employ and collaborate with human artists for the majority of our picture books."

"If Animals Had Jobs" takes a humorous look at the kinds of jobs best suited to an animal's unique skills, from an alligator who is happy to work in the sewers to a giraffe who loves to pick apples to a gorilla who makes the ideal fitness instructor.
